Sealants

Armor for Your Teeth

Dental sealants are armor for your teeth. They are made from plastic and are used as a barrier protecting your teeth against bacteria that can cause cavities. Since it can be hard to brush and floss the back teeth, sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Usually sealants are only used on children, because tooth decay can start when they are still very young, but sometimes they can be used on adults.

In order to apply a dental sealant, Dr. Visger will need to rough up the surface of the tooth. The sealant is then painted on bonding to the tooth and creates the protective coating. That tooth is protected from decay as long as the sealant is intact but it is important to continue to brush and floss. Sealants are an additional protection from tooth decay but not the only measure of prevention. Dr. Visger and his staff at Trail Ridge Dental will help you decide if getting sealants would be a good decision for you.
