Resolving Gum Disease
If gum disease has been found, deep cleanings may be warranted. The procedure for removing the plaque and tartar from your teeth surfaces and from pockets between your teeth and gums is called scaling and root planing. Treating gum disease cannot be done at home because simply brushing and flossing cannot reach the pockets in the gums. That is where the harmful bacteria hide and multiply. Treating the gum disease is done using manual tools, ultrasonic instruments or maybe both.
For periodontal treatment, you will need two appointments. A follow-up evaluation may also be recommended so that Dr. Sean Visger at Trail Ridge Dental can be sure your gums are healthy. Once this treatment is done it will be important to continue to come in for regular checkups and cleanings. Be sure to continue daily brushing and flossing to keep that smile beautiful.
